Kennedy Burke is re-signing with the New York Liberty, per team release. Jackie Powell of The Next reports that it is a one-year non-guaranteed deal for $78,831, the veteran minimum.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome back Kennedy Burke,” said Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb. “KB is a vital piece to our roster and culture alike—and building off her success in 2024—she’s poised to take on a larger role this year and further showcase her versatility.”Burke, a forward/guard hybrid, joined New York last winter, appearing in 38 regular season games en route to the team’s first WNBA championship, while compiling averages of 3.4 points and 1.5 rebounds on 40.9% (54-132) shooting from the field. While those numbers might not jump out, even from a solid rotation contributor, there’s room for increased playing time, after losing Kayla Thornton in the Golden State Valkyries’ expansion draft.
Burke struggled with her shot last season, though the limited opportunities could explain the lack of rhythm, as the career 31.1 percent three-point shooter knocked down just 25.9 percent of opportunities from deep in 2024. While even that career mark is below last year’s league average of 33.9 percent, Burke benefits when defenses have to stay honest, because she’s got a terrific first step.
On the other end of the floor, the vet is very much in the Kolb/Sandy Brondello archetype, capable of switching and guarding multiple positions. Retaining Burke, who is also a terrific locker room presence, is a strong move for a Liberty squad with aspirations of another banner.
