Greenville, S.C. — The Kentucky women’s tennis team started their individual and doubles fall season this past weekend, with five Wildcats competing against some high level competitors at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic hosted by Furman University.
The Wildcats were among the following schools at the invitational: Alabama, Clemson, Furman, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Mississippi State, Penn State, South Carolina, Texas Tech, and Wake Forest.
In doubles play, sophomore Marina Fuduric and freshman Reese Sager played as the Wildcats first pair. They went 1-2 as a pair, defeating Penn State’s duo of Olivia Dorner and Maelie Monfils. Sophomore Asuncion Jadue and freshman Elena Molla also paired up for Kentucky’s second doubles pair, also going 1-2, defeating South Carolina’s Taylor Goetz and Jane Dunyon.
In singles, Sager played first singles going 2-1 with wins over Sasha Dimitrov of Furman (7-5, 6-3) and a comeback win against Wake Forest’s Krystal Blanch (4-6, 6-3, 6-3). At second singles, Jadue also went 2-1 defeating Olivia Dorner (6-2, 6-2) and Patricia Grigoras (7-5, 2-6, 4-6), both of Penn State.
Senior Ellie Myers suited up for singles play as the Wildcats third, going 2-1 as well. Myers also defeated Grigoras (7-5, 6-4) and Sara Borkop of South Carolina (6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5)). Fuduric saw singles action at the five spot, going 2-1 with wins against Georgia Tech’s Eleni Karantali (6-0, 6-4) and Furman’s Bianca Ceroni (6-2, 6-3). Molla held down the six singles spot, defeating Clemson’s Kinsey Crawford (6-0, 6-1) and Sophie Clayton (6-0, 6-2).
With the strong start to the fall season, these five now turn to their teammates Zoe Hammond and Julia Zhu, who will compete next weekend at ITA All-Americans in Cary, N.C.
