Former Miami Dolphins running back Kenyan Drake announced his retirement on Friday, concluding an eight-season career that included a memorable moment for the Dolphins. Drake was drafted by Miami in 2016 as a third-round pick, but it was his touchdown in 2018 that will always be remembered.
On December 28, 2018, the Dolphins were down by five points against the New England Patriots with only seven seconds left on the clock. With the ball on their own 31-yard line, a miraculous play was needed – and that’s exactly what they got.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw a pass to wide receiver Kenny Stills, who then passed the ball to DeVante Parker, eventually finding Drake. Drake caught the ball at the Dolphins’ 48-yard line, broke a tackle, and maneuvered his way towards the endzone.
With a crucial block from Ted Larsen, Drake was able to outrun the Patriots defense, including Rob Gronkowski, to score the game-winning touchdown.
Known as the Miami Miracle, this play holds the record for the longest game-winning play from scrimmage in NFL history at 69 yards and earned the NFL Honors Play of the Year award in 2018.
Gronkowski still couldn’t catch Drake.
After his time with Miami, Drake went on to play for the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, and Green Bay Packers before retiring.
During his time with Miami, Drake rushed for 1,532 yards in 54 games with 16 starts, averaging 4.6 yards per carry with nine touchdowns. He also had 116 receptions for 936 yards and six receiving touchdowns.
In his career, Drake accumulated 3,866 rushing yards on 869 carries with 33 rushing touchdowns and 218 receptions for 1,655 yards and eight receiving touchdowns.
Best of luck in retirement, Kenyan Drake! Thank you for the memories!
