Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber has announced on her latest Instagram post that the 2024 Paris Olympics will be her final tournament in her tennis career. In a heartfelt message, the German star reflected on her past Olympic experiences, each representing a significant phase in her professional journey, with the upcoming Olympics being referred to as “the finish line.”
The former world No. 1, who made a comeback to tennis earlier this year after becoming a mother, acknowledges that retiring from the sport is the right decision for her at this moment, even though it is a difficult choice to come to terms with. “And while this may be the right path, it will never feel easy,” Kerber shared in her announcement. “Because my love for the sport is immense, and I am grateful for the memories and opportunities it has given me.”
At 36 years old, Kerber views the Olympics as more than just competitions; they symbolize different stages of her tennis career: the climb, the peak, and now, the finish line.
During the London 2012 Olympics, she had a breakthrough season, steadily rising in the rankings and gaining confidence. The thrill of new beginnings pushed her to new heights, particularly after almost quitting tennis in 2011.
By the Rio 2016 Olympics, she had just secured her first Grand Slam title in Australia, and her silver medal success was emotional, leading to another Grand Slam victory in New York and claiming the top spot in the rankings. Despite facing challenges the following year, she learned valuable lessons, with her biggest reward coming at Wimbledon in 2018.
Now, the Paris 2024 Olympics will signify the end of her remarkable journey. She is appreciative of the support she has received and plans to cherish every moment of this final chapter on the court before expressing her gratitude to all her supporters.
