With the 2025 WNBA season tipping off, Kevin Durant is paying particularly close attention to four teams around the league.
Responding to a fan question on X, KD singled out the Seattle Storm, Phoenix Mercury, Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics as the squads he most wants to watch:
For now, Durant shares a home arena with the Mercury, so it makes sense he’s supporting his local WNBA team. With the offseason additions of Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally, Phoenix could make some noise too.
The pair combined for 47 points in Saturday’s 81-59 over the Storm.
Seattle, meanwhile, boasts two marquee stars in Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins along with Gabby Williams, Ezi Magbegor and No. 2 overall pick Dominique Malonga.
Three-time All-Star Kelsey Plum had 37 points in her Sparks debut. If nothing else, it should be a lot of fun to follow Plum as the lead scorer for her team after she ceded some of the spotlight to A’ja Wilson on the Las Vegas Aces.
The Mystics are in the midst of a major rebuild, but their 94-90 win over the Atlanta Dream could be a sign they’ll fare better than their preseason expectations. As a Washington, D.C., native, Durant had to be excited with first-round draft picks Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron each scoring in double figures.
As KD’s post implied, it’s easy to find a compelling reason to track any of the 13 WNBA teams this year. Even the Golden State Valkyries, who were soundly beaten by L.A., have the promise that comes with any expansion franchise.
And since it’s only the opening weekend, there’s still time for new fans to find their own rooting allegiances.
