The Yankees have announced that right-hander Luis Gil has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a lower back strain. Fellow right-hander Will Warren has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.
Gil started Tuesday night’s game against the Guardians but only pitched three innings before being removed due to low back tightness. The club has not provided any updates on the expected duration of Gil’s absence.
This injury will interrupt an impressive rookie season for Gil, who has made 24 starts with a 3.39 ERA. Despite a high walk rate, he has been able to offset it with a solid strikeout rate.
Gil may have needed a break given his workload this season, which is already surpassing his previous career high in innings. The IL stint could serve as a breather for him to recharge for the remainder of the season and potential postseason.
With Gil now on the IL, the Yankees will be missing another starter in their rotation. In the meantime, Warren is expected to replace Gil in the rotation, joining other pitchers like Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and Marcus Stroman.
Despite the Yankees’ strong record this season, their rotation has not delivered exceptional results. This injury to Gil may also impact the Rookie of the Year race in the American League, potentially affecting draft picks and service time for certain players.
