Khabib Nurmagomedov And Andy Aspinall Share Emotional Conversation About Their Late Fathers Ahead Of UFC 321 Bouts

UFC 321 presented a tale of two very different nights for the fighter camps involved. For Tom Aspinall, the event ended in heartbreak as his heavyweight title defense was ruled a no-contest with just 25 seconds left in the opening round. Although Dana White has hinted at an immediate rematch, the outcome robbed Aspinall of the chance to mark a successful return after 14 months away from the Octagon. In contrast, the Abu Dhabi card was a night of triumph for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s camp. 

The former lightweight champion watched proudly as his fighters secured two victories, including a standout performance from Umar Nurmagomedov, who defeated Mario Bautista on the main card to move one step closer to the bantamweight title. Before the fights, however, cameras captured a heartfelt backstage exchange between ‘The Eagle’ and Andy Aspinall as they talked about their respective fathers.

Before the bouts, Andy Aspinall and Khabib Nurmagomedov met backstage, sharing a deeply emotional and vulnerable moment. The heavyweight champion’s father embraced ‘The Eagle’ and gently asked how he was doing, wondering if the pain of losing his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, still lingered.

Andy then opened up about his own loss, saying, “My father died after yours. It’s no good.” Khabib asked how old his father was, to which Andy replied, “88. He lived a good life. Your father was young.”  

Nurmagomedov nodded and said, “56. He was young. But this is life. We cannot control this.” The UFC Hall of Famer then embraced the heavyweight champion and praised him as the best fighter in the 265-pound division.

The Dagestani also acknowledged how frustrating it must have been for Aspinall to lose nearly a year of his prime waiting for a unification fight with Jon Jones. 

He offered both encouragement and advice, saying, “You guys are the best fight. I know you guys lose last one and half year, because you guys were waiting, waiting, waiting. When you’re on top and you’re losing your best… time never come back.”

He concluded with a heartfelt message: “But anyways, you guys are the best. Good luck!” It was both a compliment and a warning from a man who has been to the top and understands how quickly time can slip away.

For context, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov passed away on 3 July 2020 in Moscow. He had been hospitalized since May after contracting COVID-19, which aggravated a preexisting heart condition. 

The legendary trainer underwent heart surgery and was later placed in a medically induced coma. Abdulmanap’s death had a profound impact on Khabib, leading him to retire just three months later after defending his lightweight title for the third time against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254.
