“Kinda ironic”: Osaka turns a downgrade into triumph on clay in Saint-Malo

Life has a way of surprising us. When Naomi Osaka entered the WTA 125 tournament in Saint-Malo, it was widely seen as a step down. After all, it was her first event at such a low level since 2015, when she was still a teenage up-and-comer ranked outside the Top 200. But what looked like a downgrade turned into a breakthrough, as the four-time Grand Slam champion claimed her first title as a mother, and her first-ever on clay.

Naomi Osaka

Competing as a wildcard at the L’Open 35 de Saint-Malo in France, the second-seeded Osaka powered past Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan 6-1 7-5 in the final, capturing her first title since the 2021 Australian Open—and her first since becoming a mother in July 2023. The victory propeled her seven spots up the WTA rankings to No. 48, a promising boost with the French Open just around the corner. Along with the trophy, Osaka took home €13,480 in prize money.

The 27-year-old Japanese, who has long viewed clay as her weakest surface, seemed as surprised as anyone. “Kinda ironic to win my first trophy back on the surface that I thought was my worst,” she wrote on Instagram after the win. “That’s one of my favorite things about life though, there’s always room to grow and evolve.”

Osaka’s journey brings to mind Maria Sharapova, who once famously described herself as “a cow on ice” when it came to clay—only to conquer the surface and complete a Career Grand Slam at Roland Garros in 2012. While Osaka’s win in Saint-Malo doesn’t carry the prestige of a major, it stands as a meaningful milestone.

Next stop: Rome. Osaka is set to play the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, where she’ll face 2012 French Open finalist Sara Errani in the first round. Another test on clay, another chance to evolve.
