Kyle Larson pulled off an unexpected feat at Homestead-Miami in his No. 07 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. The 32-year-old NASCAR driver seemed to be lagging in the early laps of the race but picked up pace in the latter section as he drove his way to a glorious win.

How Kyle Larson Won the Baptist Health 200 at Homestead-Miami

The South Florida race on March 21, was full of drama, with intense climaxes, plot twists, and unexpected outcomes. Larson himself could not fully comprehend the result.

One of the fan favorites, Corey Heim of Tricon Garage, was the leading contender of the race and led 78 out of the total 134 laps. The young racer almost emerged victorious until the engine of his Tundra did not back him due to inexplicable technical glitches.

Heim’s truck experienced sudden power cuts, with his dashboard going black in the final laps, forcing him to relinquish his lead twice. The final time, he was unable to recover.

Layne Riggs capitalized on Heim’s misfortune, taking the lead in his No. 34 Ford as the race neared its conclusion. Meanwhile, Larson, who had spun on Lap 89, steadily worked his way back through the field.

With three laps remaining, Heim’s final mechanical failure left Riggs in control — until Larson made his decisive move. In a thrilling final-lap pass, Larson overtook Riggs to secure the victory.

After the race, the Hendrick Motorsports driver reflected on his unexpected win:

“Not sure what happened to the 11 [Heim], but that worked out in our favor for sure,” Larson said. “I don’t think I would have gotten to him [otherwise]. Obviously, I would have gotten to second, probably, but that would have been tough to get to him. That last run was a lot of fun.”

Larson’s Next Steps for a Tripleheader Sweep

With his remarkable March 21 win at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Larson is one step closer to a tripleheader sweep as he gears for the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on the same track on March 22. A Hard Rock Bet 300 win would get him one step closer, with the NASCAR Cup Series Straight Talk Wireless 400 on March 23 being the final step.

To date, Kyle Busch is the only driver to achieve a triple-series sweep, first accomplishing the feat in 2010 at Bristol Motor Speedway. He repeated the milestone in 2017, becoming the only driver to do it twice.

As Larson prepares for the next challenge, he remains a strong contender in the NASCAR Cup Series. He currently ranks sixth in the 2025 standings, with five starts, two stage wins, and 73 laps led.
