Without a doubt, the Los Angeles Dodgers boast a roster brimming with talent.
A talented roster is crucial for winning a World Series, and Los Angeles has been actively enhancing their championship-winning team since securing their eighth championship.
On Friday afternoon, the Dodgers inked a three-year deal with 25-year-old infielder Hyeseong Kim, who spent eight seasons in the Korean Baseball Organization. The contract includes a two-year option that could increase the total value to $22 million.
Last season, Kim posted impressive stats with a .326/.383/.458 batting line, hitting a career-high 11 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 30 stolen bases for the Kiwoom Heroes. He has received three KBO Gold Glove awards and has experience playing multiple positions such as second base, third base, shortstop, left field, and right field.
During the Winter Meetings last month, Dodgers executive vice president and general manager Brandon Gomes mentioned that eight-time All-Star Mookie Betts plans to be the team’s everyday shortstop in 2025. This implies that Tommy Edman could move to center field, and Gavin Lux, who has been rumored as a trade candidate, might secure a spot at second base.
Gomes seems more focused on capitalizing on the additional infield option that Kim brings rather than pursuing trades.
Regarding the need to make room for Kim, Gomes stated, “We don’t feel like there’s anything necessarily that we need to do.” With the injuries the Dodgers faced in 2024, having surplus talent will be invaluable.
This signing also alleviates concerns about the future of utility man Chris Taylor. The 34-year-old is under contract until the end of the 2025 season with a club option for 2026. If trades are not necessary, Taylor is likely to be part of L.A.’s bid for another title.
However, fellow utility man and fan favorite Kiké Hernández might face a different fate.
Despite expressing his desire to rejoin the team, the 32-year-old free agent may struggle to secure a spot on the now infield-heavy roster.
