Las Vegas Aces Battle To 10 Game Win Streak

With a Saturday afternoon win over the Washington Mystics, the Las Vegas Aces find themselves riding a 10-game win streak. The current win streak is the longest single season win streak since the franchise moved to Las Vegas, and right now it doesn’t look like it will be ending any time soon.

This win streak follows a 53-point loss to the Minnesota Lynx, and as head coach Becky Hammon put it, 

“We’re figuring out how to win together, and sometimes we have to go through some rough patches, some tough lessons, to get there.”

At the time of that rout, the Aces were 14-14 and seventh in the overall standings. The season outlook at that time was not so hot, however, Hammon gives her players all the credit because in June and July the team could have fallen apart. In this turnaround for the Aces everybody is stepping up, from the starting five to every single bench player.

Spotlight Players

Besides MVP candidate A’ja Wilson, who is currently averaging 22.8 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.2 blocks, the Aces have seen major production from Dana Evans. In these past 10 games, Evans is averaging 7.8 points, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc, and has found herself in the starting lineup a few times. 

Another player who has played a key role in the system Hammon has created is NaLyssa Smith. The Aces trading for Smith has turned out to be a great move not only for the team, but for Wilson, who needed another big to create space for Wilson to work with. Currently Smith is averaging 7.4 points and 5.4 rebounds. 

Having Jewell Loyd coming off the bench has been another productive move by Hammon, as there has been a noticeable uptick in production and consistency during the streak.

The Turnaround

The turnaround for the Las Vegas Aces has been their ability to become a more potent offensive team. For the season, the Aces average 82.6 points a game, however in their win streak they have scored over that average in eight out of ten games. Their per game average the past 10 games is 88.6 points. 

For the month of August the Aces are ranked third in 3-point shooting (36.7 percent) and third in rebounding (35.1). This team has found a way to climb up a steep hill, as it was shooting dead last in the league from the three (28.3 percent) in July, The Aces’ team field goal percentage went from 43.7 percent in July to 45.3 percent in August so far. 

This team has always been talented, and at the beginning of the season the Aces were in a tough spot, but credit every person in the organization sticking together and believing in the coaching system and personnel in order to play to its vast potential. Right now we are witnessing Wilson make a serious case in the MVP conversations, Evans looks like the Sixth Woman of the Year and Hammon a Coach of the Year candidate.

Like Coach Hammon said, every season is a process, and it took two rough months to get on the path the team is on right now. The Aces are currently eyeing that second overall seed for the playoffs, and are looking to keep that positive momentum come playoff time.
