Even though Lauri Markkanen extended his contract in Utah, he remains eligible to be traded during the next offseason. Some sources suggest that the Warriors’ failed attempt to acquire him may have actually been a blessing in disguise.
ESPN’s Kendra Andrews commented on the situation, stating that Golden State did not want to engage in any unfavorable deals that would require them to give up key players without certainty of acquiring their desired player in return.
Negotiations with Utah reportedly stalled as the Jazz asked for second-year guard Brandin Podziemski and multiple draft picks in exchange for Markkanen. The Warriors value their young prospects highly and would only consider trading for Markkanen with an overwhelming offer.
Markkanen’s contract extension in Utah prevents him from being traded for the next six months, pushing any potential trade to the next offseason.
After extending his contract with Utah, reports indicated that the Warriors were interested in Jonas Valanciunas, who recently signed a team-friendly deal. Many believe a trade for Valanciunas could happen before the trade deadline next year.
Other teams, including the Lakers, have also shown interest in acquiring Valanciunas, but competition is expected to be high for his services.
