Basketball superstar LeBron James has chosen a WNBA star to lead his voter outreach group, with a renewed emphasis on engaging women voters.
The nonprofit organization More Than a Vote, established by James in 2020 during the unrest following George Floyd’s death, saw a decline in activity after the 2020 presidential election. Now, James is looking to revitalize the initiative by handing over the reins to WNBA player Nneka Ogwumike, who will concentrate on issues that are significant to women, such as abortion.
“So proud to pass the torch to @nnekaogwumike and an incredible team of women for this next round,” James wrote in a post on X. “Their voice is the most powerful right now and we need to get behind them. I encourage y’all to join the fight with us, led by these great ladies and @morethanavote!”
Ogwumike had previously been involved in political activities, serving as a poll worker in 2020, as reported by the New York Times. She connected with James earlier this year.
For this new endeavor, she has enlisted the help of several female athletes, including Brittany Griner, who was released from a Russian prison in a prisoner exchange last year.

In 2020, More Than a Vote exceeded expectations by raising $4.2 million. The organization set up polling places in sports arenas, ran advertisements, and engaged in social media outreach. While its focus was primarily on black voters in 2020, it now aims to shift its attention more towards female voters.
“It’s more than just abortion,” Ogwumike explained in an interview. “It’s about educating people on the various roles that exist in society to support and protect women’s freedoms regarding family planning, IVF, birth control, and more. There’s a lot at stake.”
