With just four weeks remaining until Min Woo participates in his first Olympic golf competition, and Minjee gearing up for her third consecutive Games just six days later, the Lee siblings are eagerly anticipating the experience.
Although their paths may only briefly cross during the two weeks of competition, Minjee is hoping to arrive in time to witness Min Woo’s final round. Both siblings have expressed their excitement to fully embrace everything that an Olympic Games has to offer.
Video and audio interviews with Minjee and Min Woo Lee are available here.
Minjee, who was 20 years old when golf returned to the Olympics in 2016, missed out on visiting the Olympic Village in Tokyo due to Covid restrictions. This makes her all the more excited for the Paris 2024 Games, where she hopes to fully immerse herself in the Olympic experience.
Minjee shared in a call with Australian media, “It was a little bit different in Rio because it was the inaugural year and then Tokyo was a Covid edition. Paris will be a proper experience of how an Olympics should be.”
“You’ve just got to be there to experience it. Min won’t quite understand right now, but once he goes there, he’ll really be able to feel it.” – Minjee Lee.
Expressing her anticipation for the upcoming Games, Minjee said, “I’m really looking forward to going and seeing the Olympic Village. I read some things on the Olympic information and it seems like there’s a great set-up there. I’m especially excited to see the gym. The gym is just always such a great set-up; it’s a gym person’s dream.”
While Min Woo has previous experience playing at the host venue, Le Golf National, he is also looking forward to enhancing his Olympic experience beyond the golf course. He plans to participate in the Opening Ceremony held on the River Seine.
Min Woo shared, “I’m going to be going to the Opening Ceremony as it’s just before our practice rounds. Very excited to see fellow Australians and other countries and we’re on a boat going around the river. That’ll be very cool, to get to experience that and stay at the Olympic Village, which is awesome.”
Being just over two years apart in age, Minjee and Min Woo are set to become the 16th Australian siblings to represent Australia in the same sport at the same Olympic Games. This holds special significance for them as they recognize the honor and privilege of representing their country on such a global stage.
“You’re playing for something bigger than just yourself, you’re playing for your country.” – Minjee Lee.
Min Woo, currently ranked 31st in the men’s world golf rankings, added, “There’s not many tournaments where you represent Australia and in a team environment, too. We play for ourselves and our country of course in big tournaments, but especially coming every four years, it’s pretty special to rep Australia and try to do our best.”
