USC star JuJu Watkins is making waves in the college game, impressing pros like Lexie Brown with her dominant performances. Watkins has already broken numerous records and looks set to break even more, including one set by former Iowa star Caitlin Clark.
Watkins is solidifying her status as one of the top college players, earning high praise from Brown. The LA Sparks guard took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to commend Watkins’ game.
“I love watching Juju play so much,” Brown tweeted.
After Brown’s post, someone suggested that Hannah Hidalgo was a better player than Watkins. Instead of arguing, Brown showed admiration.
“The game is in great hands,” Brown tweeted.
One of Clark’s records from her time at Iowa is the number of 30-point games in her first two seasons, with 23 from 2020-21 to 2021-22.
Watkins scored 31 points against Michigan on Sunday, leading USC to a 78–58 victory. This marked her 17th 30-point performance dating back to her freshman season.
This means Watkins is just six games away from matching Clark’s record and seven games away from breaking it for the most 30-point games in the first two seasons.
USC still has 16 regular-season games from Wednesday to Mar. 1, 2025, followed by the Big Ten Tournament. This gives Watkins plenty of opportunities to break Clark’s record.
Lexie Brown picked Caitlin Clark as her ROTY over Angel Reese before the award’s winner was announced
Lexie Brown is a regular on the “Gil’s Arena” podcast. In July, the panel debated who should be named the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year: Angel Reese or Caitlin Clark. Brown leaned towards Clark while acknowledging Reese’s strengths.
“Depends on what you value,” Brown said. “For me, I’m valuing the IQ, passing, shot-making ability of Caitlin Clark. They’ve managed to turn their season around a little bit. Then you go on the flipside and Angel, winning Rookie of the Month, breaking WNBA records, rebounding.
“So it’s what you value more and for me, from the way I like to play basketball, my vote would be for Caitlin. But it’s close, I wouldn’t be mad at either one of them.” (6:44)
Clark ultimately won the Rookie of the Year award with 66 of the 67 votes from the panel of broadcasters and media personnel. The one vote that didn’t go to her went to Angel Reese.
