Earlier today, Red Bull Racing confirmed the departure of Daniel Ricciardo, expressing gratitude for his contributions across two separate stints with the team.
Following Ricciardo’s departure, Red Bull Racing announced that Lawson, who has served as a reserve driver since 2022, will take on the role starting with the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin.
Lawson made his Grand Prix debut last year at Zandvoort as a substitute for the injured Ricciardo, impressing with a series of solid performances over five races, culminating in his first points finish with a ninth-place at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The decision to replace Ricciardo with Lawson for the season’s final six races follows deliberations at the senior leadership level within Red Bull Racing. This move allows the team to evaluate Lawson alongside his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who is enjoying a standout season and has already secured a contract for next year.
Laurent Mekies, team principal of Red Bull Racing, expressed gratitude to Ricciardo for his dedication and professionalism during his tenure with the team, highlighting his positive impact both on and off the track.
“We are thankful for Daniel’s contributions over the past two seasons,” Mekies said. “His experience and talent have greatly benefited the team, and his positive attitude has fostered a strong team spirit. Daniel has been a true gentleman, always smiling, and he will be missed while holding a special place within the Red Bull family.”
Mekies also warmly welcomed Lawson, emphasizing the young driver’s familiarity with the team and his ability to handle pressure under challenging circumstances.
“We are excited to welcome Liam,” Mekies continued. “He has already demonstrated his capabilities with us last season, and we believe he will seamlessly transition into his new role. It’s fantastic to see young talent from within the Red Bull program stepping up, and we look forward to working together for the remainder of the season.”
In response to his promotion, Liam Lawson expressed gratitude and excitement about fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a Formula 1 driver.
“I’ve dreamed of being a Formula 1 driver since I was a kid, and I’m thrilled to see that dream come true,” Lawson commented. “I want to thank Red Bull Racing and the entire team for this opportunity. I am extremely grateful and eager to get to work.”
The stage is now set for Lawson to make his mark alongside Tsunoda as Red Bull Racing aims to finish the season on a high note with their new driver lineup.
Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo reflected on his departure, thanking the team and fans for their support throughout his career:
“I’ve loved this sport my whole life. It’s wild, it’s wonderful, and it’s been a journey. To the teams and individuals who’ve played their part, thank you. And to the fans who love the sport as much as I do – if not more – thank you. There have been highs and lows, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Until the next adventure.”
With Liam Lawson now officially stepping into the driver’s seat, all eyes will be on the young New Zealander as he takes on the challenge of racing against F1’s elite. For Ricciardo, the next chapter remains unclear, but his legacy within Red Bull and the wider world of Formula 1 is assured.
