Liam Lawson may potentially have a new teammate in 2025 as rumored within the paddock about Sergio Perez’s future in Formula 1. Despite this speculation, the New Zealand driver acknowledged that the pressure to perform within the Red Bull family is constant. This pressure may intensify if Max Verstappen becomes his teammate in the upcoming year.
During our road trip from California to Nevada before the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Lawson discussed the ongoing evaluation process in Formula 1. He mentioned, “You’re always being evaluated, especially in your early years in F1, with the way our contracts are set up and the performance clauses teams have. We are always under pressure, and you’re never really safe.”
Although Lawson secured a full-time seat at VCARB, replacing Daniel Ricciardo in September, the pressure did not diminish. He explained, “Last year, I was trying to secure a full-time seat. Now that I have achieved that, I’m focusing on staying in Formula 1. The objective remains the same—to deliver the best results—but your mindset doesn’t change.”
Despite the intense pressure, Lawson found solace in the warm reception from the paddock. He expressed gratitude for Max Verstappen’s support, emphasizing how the four-time world champion had followed his Super Formula and DTM races closely. Lawson recalled interactions with Max after his races, where the Dutch driver provided valuable advice and feedback.
Less than a year after his first Formula 1 appearance, Lawson received the call to secure a full-time seat at VCARB. Reflecting on the months of speculation surrounding his future, Lawson described the moment as a relief. He waited to inform his parents until the deal was finalized, highlighting their unwavering support and sacrifices for his career.
