Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu to compete in 3-point contest at WNBA All-Star Game

Sabrina Ionescu posted a cryptic Instagram story Friday with a photo from her 3-point shootout with Stephen Curry at last year’s NBA All-Star that was accompanied by several eyeball emojis.

The post led many to believe that it was Ionescu subtly announcing her plans to participate in the 3-point contest at WNBA All-Star later this week.

Ionescu confirmed to The Post after Sunday’s win that people’s assumptions were correct, saying she’ll indeed be a part of Friday’s 3-point contest in Indianapolis.

She joins Mystics rookie Sonia Citron as the only two players confirmed to be participating, though there’s a strong belief that Fever star Caitlin Clark will join in the fun, too, given that her team’s city is hosting the event.

This will be Ionescu’s second time being part of the WNBA’s 3-point contest and her first since she won the event in 2023.

During that memorable final round, Ionescu scored a record 37 points. Not only was it enough to win the competition but it also broke the previous WNBA and NBA single-round record.

Ionescu also went head-to-head against Stephen Curry at the 2024 NBA All-Star weekend. The Warriors star bested Ionescu with a score of 29-26, but it was a huge hit.

Asked about potentially going head-to-head with Clark specifically, Ionescu said, “I gotta get through to the second round. Who even knows if I’m in the second round.”

Ionescu, who earned her fourth All-Star nod this year, is a career 35.9 percent shooter from downtown.

This season, she’s made 47 3-pointers — tied for third most in the league — while shooting a career-low 32.4 percent from deep.

The Liberty waived guard Marquesha Davis ahead of Sunday’s mid-season cut down deadline or the last day teams could waive unprotected (non-guaranteed) contracts without financial penalty.

The move gives the Liberty more financial flexibility moving forward and opens a roster spot in case they want to add another player.

Coach Sandy Brondello said pregame roster moves like Sunday’s are always “tough decisions.”

Davis, the No. 11 pick in 2024, appeared in only nine games this season — mostly in garbage time.

“She didn’t get many opportunities but we felt growth in these last two years,” Brondello said. “She’s learned to play, compete and be better as a pro, what it takes to play at this level.”

If Davis clears waivers, the Liberty could potentially bring her back on a seven-day deal. She could also sign elsewhere.

Nyara Sabally recorded a career-high four blocks Sunday against the Dream.

Sabally blocked both Dream bigs Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones in the fourth quarter to help the Liberty seal a much-needed win.

“That kind of saved us,” Breanna Stewart said. “And she just didn’t give up.”

Sabally also contributed seven points, nine rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.
