Ben Whittaker makes his highly anticipated debut with Matchroom tonight against Benjamin Gavazi in this tune-level main event for the vacant WBC Silver light heavyweight title.
Whittaker (9-0-1, 6 KOs) plans on using this fight as a showcase for fans on DAZN against Gavazi (19-1, 13 KOs). Tonight’s event is at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, England. It’ll be shown live on DAZN beginning at 2:00 pm ET / 11:00 p.m. PT.
Live results of tonight’s action will be provided below.
Molly McCann (2-0, 1 KOs) defeated Ebanie Cotton (1-1) by a closer-than-expected six-round points decision in super bantamweight action. Cotton suffered a cut on her forehead in the third round.
She was getting dominated by the 35-year-old McCann through four rounds. However, Cotton’s volume punching and constant pressure allowed her to get the better of a tired-looking McCann in the fifth and sixth rounds. Referee Ryan Churchill scored it 58-56.
Ibraheem ‘Spider’ Sulaimaan (10-0, 5 KOs) scored a sixth-round TKO victory over Nico Ogbeide (6-2-1) to capture the vacant BBBofC Midlands Area super featherweight title. Sulaimann trapped Ogbeide against the ropes in the sixth and landed a flurry of unanswered shots, causing referee Chris Dean to step in and halt the fight. The official time was at 1:52 of round six.
The German Gavazi, 30, is a step up for Whittaker to get him ready to begin fighting top-tier opposition at light heavyweight. Promoter Eddie Hearn has already said he believes the 28-year-old Whittaker will be prepared to take on the “machines” at 175 within “five fights.”
It may need to be sooner if he wants Ben to catch the aging, injury-slowed Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev before they retire. The third apex predator at light heavyweight, David Benavidez, may not stay in the division for much longer due to his planned move to cruiserweight. So, he’s another one that Whittaker must fight sooner rather than later.
