When the Lakers made their franchise-altering move to acquire Luka Doncic and later extend him long-term, they weren’t just securing a superstar, they were betting on their next championship leader.
And Doncic has made it clear he intends to live up to the standard set by the icons who came before him.
Even before his first official game in purple and gold, expectations were beyond enormous for the former Dallas star.
At 26-years-old and entering his prime, Doncic approached this season with a renewed mindset, undergoing what many inside the organization described as the best physical transformation of his career.
Recently, he didn’t shy away from discussing the legacy he hopes to build.

“Kobe brought so many championships here,” Doncic said, via Access Hollywood. “LeBron brought a championship here. So I want to be the next one to do that, for sure. I met Kobe, I’m playing with LeBron, just as a little kid in Slovenia, I just wanted to play basketball. Just wanted to touch the NBA. And now I’m playing with the best.”
Those words reflect a player fully aware of the weight Los Angeles carries, and fully embracing it.
Despite doubts from many analysts entering the season, Doncic has powered the Lakers to a 12-4 start, keeping them near the top of the Western Conference and positioning them as legitimate contenders as LeBron James integrates back into the lineup.
Doncic has already reached the NBA Finals once in his career during his Dallas run, but winning the title is clearly what drives him now.
The parallels are impossible to ignore: both Kobe Bryant and LeBron James captured championships in Los Angeles within four years of joining the franchise. Doncic is intent on following that same path.
