Manchester United suffered a humiliating 0-3 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday. The loss marked United’s third defeat of the season and their second consecutive home loss by the same scoreline, leaving them dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Despite bolstering their defense in the summer, United have not shown much improvement, as evidenced by their current goal difference of minus three after six games.
Injuries to both left-backs have led to Erik ten Hag relying on Diogo Dalot on the left and new signing Noussair Mazraoui on the right.
Mazraoui has impressed, but Dalot’s form has been inconsistent, likely due to his heavy workload this season. Even in the Carabao Cup game against Barnsley, Dalot was not given a rest and struggled against Spurs, allowing Brennan Johnson to score an early tap-in goal.
The lack of reinforcements on the left side is evident, as United have had to play makeshift options like Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof in that position. Antonee Robinson was a target for United, but Liverpool and Chelsea are eyeing a summer move for the player.
Rumors suggest that INEOS may make an early move for Robinson, potentially setting up a January deal. United are keen on securing Robinson’s signature to fend off competition from Liverpool and Chelsea.
However, Fulham is unlikely to part ways with Robinson easily, as his current contract runs until 2028. Ten Hag will hope for the return of Malacia and Shaw’s fitness to improve the team’s defensive options.
Despite receiving backing in the transfer market, Ten Hag’s future at the club remains uncertain due to the lack of improvement in results. INEOS may have to make a decision on the managerial situation soon.
