Mark Cuban has always been one of the NBA’s most outspoken and hands-on owners, but even he admits not everything has gone the way he expected when it comes to the Dallas Mavericks.
Cuban sold 73 percent of the team to the Adelson family in 2023, a move that shifted control of the franchise after more than two decades under his watch.
While he still maintains a role in the organization, the longtime owner admitted that he would have handled the process differently.
“I don’t regret selling the team, I regret how I did it,” Cuban recently revealed on the DLLS Podcast. “Would I still sell the team? Yes, for all the reasons that I’ve said 100 times. Would I do it the same way? Absolutely not. I would’ve put it out to bid, but I didn’t so it doesn’t matter. I got along great with them, they gave me their man of the year award.”
Even though Cuban still has a seat at the table, he admitted the terms of the deal limited his ability to remain directly involved with the players and day-to-day operations.
“The contractual terms didn’t turn out the way, the contract didn’t lead to what I expected to happen,” Cuban said.
That admission signals just how much things have changed in Dallas. The Mavericks now enter their first full season without Luka Doncic, who was traded for Anthony Davis.
New number one overall pick Cooper Flagg joins Davis in leading a franchise that looks very different from the one Cuban built his reputation on.
