The manager of the Miami Marlins, Skip Schumaker, has a long history in baseball. In a show of respect, he decided not to intentionally walk Shohei Ohtani on Thursday night.
During the seventh inning, Ohtani came up to bat needing one more home run to achieve a record – 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. With two runners on base and first base open, Schumaker was given the option to walk Ohtani but he chose not to.
The TV broadcast captured Schumaker saying, “F-ck that,” which was relayed by Joe Davis.
Tipping Pitches shared the full message on social media, where Schumaker said, “F-ck that. I’ve got too much respect for this guy for that sh-t to happen.”
Reports asked Schumaker about this decision after the game, to which he replied, “That’s a bad move, baseball-wise, karma-wise, baseball-gods-wise. You go after him and see if you can get him out. I think out of respect for the game, we were going to go after him.”
Ohtani hit his 50th home run off a Mike Baumann curveball, then proceeded to hit his 51st homer off position player Vidal Brujan.
“He hit the home run,” Schumaker commented. “That’s just part of the deal. He’s hit 50 of them, he’s the most talented player I’ve ever seen. He is doing things that I’ve never seen done before in the game and if he has a couple more of these peak years he might be the best ever to play the game.”
“As a fan, I wish I was in the stands not in the dugout seeing it. I’m proud of the guys that were attacking him and not scared of him and that’s how you should go after it. He hit the home run, I know Baumann didn’t want the home run to be hit but he hit it.
“So, it was a good day for baseball, bad day for the Marlins.”
