The recent buyout of Bell’s stake in the parent company of the Toronto Raptors by Rogers Communications could potentially impact the future of Masai Ujiri with the franchise, as reported by The Athletic. Ujiri’s current contract to lead the Raptors is in effect until the 2025-2026 season.
Rogers chairman Edward Rogers reportedly gave close scrutiny to the decision of paying Ujiri as one of the NBA’s most highly compensated executives when his contract was up for renewal in 2021. There has been a history of strained relations between Rogers and Ujiri. Despite Larry Tanenbaum’s continued influence as the Raptors’ governor, his power within the franchise may diminish with Rogers now holding the majority ownership. Tanenbaum has played a significant role as Ujiri’s mentor within MLSE.
When contacted by The Athletic, Ujiri declined to comment and expressed no concerns regarding the sale.
