McDonald’s All-American Player Analysis: Austin Goosby

Now, we’ve seen the social posts about snubs from the McDonald’s All-American Game and there are definitely snubs, but I wanted to highlight the guys that made it. The first player I want to highlight is Texas’ own, Austin Goosby.

The UT-Austin pledge is a 6’6 combo guard that raises the floor on any team he’s on. He’s a great connecting piece. What makes him special is how he makes others around him better while also being a disruptive switchable defender. His brother is Trevor Goosby, an offensive lineman at University of Texas, who is projected to be a top 10 pick in the 2027 NFL draft.

Austin Goosby Detailed Report

A rangy combo guard with a plus 3 wingspan. Goosby is a streaky spot up shooter but shows more fluidity as a shooter off the bounce. Stops well and is able to get good lift on his pull-up jumper. What’s most promising about Austin is his passing acumen. He’s a willing passer and actually prefers to pass more than score when you talk to him. Austin can be unselfish to a fault, but when he’s playing with a more appropriate diet of play-making and scoring, he shows why he was selected to the Burger Game.

I talked about raising the floor. Since joining Dynamic Prep (Dallas Texas), it have only lost one game (lost 3 prior to his arrival). In The Overtime League, he’s averaging 16.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 5.1 apg and 2.1 spg on 52/41/87 shooting splits.

Goosby operates better in pick & roll and more so with the screener being a play finisher/lob threat. That allows him to hit the skip pass or get his own shot off due to the roller generating a lot of gravity. In isolation, he’s improved as a one-on-one scorer due to elevating higher on his shot off the bounce and adding weight to his frame to absorb and bounce off contact better. Doesn’t have a crazy burst, but it’s good enough to get where he wants. Austin’s mechanics are fine as a shooter, but he’s an up and down 33-point shooter right now.

Defensively, he does a fine job as an individual and team defender. Goosby moves well laterally and he anticipates well. He times well when the ball-handler is looking to make a counter and uses his length to tip the pass away. Goosby’s ability to face-guard and make it challenging for someone to pass it to the guy he’s guarding is translatable,, too. He mirrors the offensive player and doesn’t allow the guy to beat him with a backdoor. He just utilizes his length to cover ground and deflect passes or block shots.

The practices and scrimmages are my favorite part of the weekend. I feel like that’s when the guys compete the most. Looking at the 2026 McDonald’s West Roster, I feel like Austin will have the opportunity to play a lot on the ball, especially since most of the guards are on the East squad. His playmaking chops, and being a high level connector, will allow him to be placed with any lineup. During the week, it’ll be important for Austin to be assertive and show he belongs.
