The Butler women’s basketball team took a 101-59 loss at #6 UConn on Sunday afternoon. Kilyn McGuff highlighted the day for the Bulldogs by scoring a team-high 17 points. McGuff also reached 1,000 career points at the XL Center.
UConn opened the game on an 8-0 scoring run and ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run to grab a 31-14 lead against Butler. Kilyn McGuff highlighted the opening 10 minutes by making three of her five 3-point attempts to net nine early points. Paige Bueckers was the game’s leading scorer with 10 on 4-of-7 shooting.
UConn shot 72 percent from the field in the first quarter and 69 percent in the first half (24-35). The Huskies only outscored Butler by four points over the first five minutes of the second quarter but would move forward to win the frame 28-12, taking a 59-26 halftime lead. UConn ended the second quarter on an 18-2 scoring run.
Riley Makalusky had seven points in the second quarter for BU. She and McGuff were the only Bulldogs to make more than one field goal vs. UConn in the first half. Paige Bueckers had a game-high 16 at the break and Ashlynn Shade added 10.
Kilyn McGuff hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game early in the third quarter to reach 1,000 career points. Sydney Jaynes also impacted the BU offense after halftime with seven points in the period. That duo combined to score 13 of Butler’s 16 points in the third.
UConn’s 82-42 advantage heading into the fourth held the rest of the way. BU did outscore UConn by four over the first five minutes of the fourth (10-6) but the Huskies would win the quarter 19-17 taking us to the final score of 101-59.
