McKenna Johnson Posts Career-High, Butler Falls to Creighton 67-58

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler fell to the Creighton Bluejays 67-58 on Wednesday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse. McKenna Johnson posted a career-high 18 points in the contest, but it wasn’t enough for Butler to secure the victory. With the loss, Butler slides to 9-18 on the year and 3-14 in BIG EAST play while Creighton improves to 13-14 overall and 9-9 in conference action.

BULLDOG HIGHLIGHTS

McKenna Johnson poured in a career-high 18 points and shot 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Johnson added four rebounds and an assist to her stat line.
Saniya Jackson led BU on the glass, pulling down five rebounds.
Mallory Miller paced the offense, dishing out four assists in the contest.
Butler shot 21-for-56 (37.5%%) from the floor and shot 7-for-19 (36.8%) from beyond the arc.
BU forced 13 Creighton turnovers.  
The Dawgs outrebounded Creighton 34-29.

 
CREIGHTON HIGHLIGHTS

Grace Boffeli led a trio of Bluejays in double figures with 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor.
Boffeli led CU on the glass, pulling down a game-high nine rebounds.
Three different Bluejays recorded three assists in the contest.
Creighton shot 24-for-52 (46.2%) from the floor and shot 9-for-20 (45%) from beyond the arc.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

Creighton opened the game on a 10-3 run with the help of two 3-pointers. Butler responded with a 9-4 run as the Dawgs cut the deficit to two with just over two minutes left in the quarter. Creighton closed the first frame with a 19-14 advantage.
CU opened the second on a 7-1 run as the visitors’ lead grew to 11 (26-15). CU continued to pressure the Dawgs, holding BU scoreless for over 2:50, as the visitors’ lead ballooned to as many as 19 (34-15). Butler responded with a 10-0 run of its own, cutting the CU advantage to 11 with under a minute left. CU took the 44-28 lead into the half.
Butler opened the second half on a 6-0 run, forcing the Bluejays to take a timeout at the 7:46 mark of the third quarter as BU cut the deficit to 10 (44-34). BU went 1-for-9 down the stretch as CU was able to extend the lead to 15 (51-36). The Dawgs then held Creighton scoreless for the final 3:44 of the quarter and cut the deficit to eight (51-43) heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
Both sides traded buckets to start the fourth. CU was able to grow its lead to 12 at the halfway mark of the quarter (60-48). Butler was unable to mount a comeback in the final minutes, dropping the contest 67-58 at the final whistle.

 
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, February 21, as BU travels to Washington, D.C., to take on the Georgetown Hoyas in the Dawgs’ second-to-last away game of the season. Tip-off between the two sides is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
