TIME recently named Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark as their 2024 Athlete of the Year, sparking debates about her deserving the honor and discussions on race. Critics have pointed out the attention she has received compared to Black players. Former USWNT captain Megan Rapinoe believes this backlash highlights a broader issue in women’s sports.
In an episode of the A Touch More podcast with her wife, Sue Bird, Rapinoe expressed her concerns. She stated, “Anytime there is a positive story in women’s sports, it is immediately flooded with divisive narratives.” She emphasized the need for awareness regarding this trend.
Clark, in an interview with TIME, recognized the influence of Black players in paving the way for her WNBA career. She acknowledged her privilege as a white person and credited the league’s Black stars for their role in its growth.
