A-League Women leaders Melbourne City extended their lead at the top of the table with a win over Perth Glory on the road.

Meanwhile, Wellington Phoenix moved into second, Brisbane Roar extended their unbeaten streak, and Sydney FC’s troubles continued. Here’s what happened in the latest round of A-League results.

Brisbane Roar 3-1 Canberra United

Brisbane Roar extended their unbeaten run to five games with a win over Canberra.

The visitors took the lead with 13 minutes gone. Chloe Lincoln’s poor clearance landed at the feet of Sofia Christopherson and she swept the ball home from 25 yards.

Daisy Brown pulled the Roar level on the stroke of half-time when she tapped home Ashlyn Miller’s cross at the back post.

A sensational solo effort from Sharn Freier put the hosts ahead with 25 minutes left. Latching onto Lincoln’s clearance just inside the Canberra half, she powered through the challenge of Hayley Taylor-Young before slotting the ball past Sally James.

Bente Jansen’s composed finish from just outside the box in the last minute sealed the win for Brisbane.

Central Coast Mariners 1-2 Western Sydney Wanderers

A Holly Caspers double earned Western Sydney a priceless win over the Mariners in Gosford.

Caspers’ first came ten minutes before half-time. Cong Yuan’s through ball was inch perfect for the Western Sydney striker and she made no mistake to slot the visitors into the lead.

The lead didn’t last long — five minutes in fact. Annalise Rasmussen timed her run to perfection, taking Avaani Prakash’s pass into her stride and slamming in the equaliser.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Red and Black were back ahead. Caspers ghosted in between the Mariners centre backs to thump her header past Annalee Grove.

Eliza Familton was denied by Sham Khamis and Millie Farrow struck the bar as the Mariners search for an equaliser proved to be in vain.

Perth Glory 0-2 Melbourne City

Melbourne City stretched their lead at the top to five points thanks to Holly McNamara’s brace.

City’s first came when McNamara took full advantage of a mix-up between goalkeeper Teresa Morrisey and Emma Tovar. Last season’s Golden Boot winner needed no invitation to chip the ball over Morrisey.

The table-toppers continued to look the more threatening side. Rebekah Stott and Deven Jackson both fired over before the break.

McNamara settled the game when she fired low into the bottom corner from the edge of the box following Bryleeh Henry’s clever cut-back.

Wellington Phoenix 3-1 Adelaide United

Wellington Phoenix moved up to second with an impressive win over Adelaide.

Makala Woods side-footed the Nix into a 15th-minute lead after good work from ex-Reds player Lucía León down the right hand side.

Three minutes later, Brooke Nunn doubled the lead. She skipped round Ilona Melegh and coolly slid the ball home.

Adriana Taranto had the best chance of the half for Adelaide, but she could only slice wide after doing well to cut in and get her shot away.

Nunn bagged her second and Wellington’s third with a fine strike from distance in the 86th minute. Isabel Hodgson struck a minute later for Adelaide, but it was merely a consolation.

Melbourne Victory 0-0 Sydney FC

Sydney FC’s struggles continued as they drew a blank in the Big Blue.

Amelia Caesar went close for the visitors, but her effort was tipped over by Courtney Newbon after 16 minutes.

Three minutes later, it was Victory’s turn to go close as Kennedy White struck the post after her initial shot was blocked by Willa Pearson.

White spurned a glorious chance to put Victory ahead ten minutes into the second half, but Heater Hinz produced a fine stop.

Ella O’Grady scuffed a shot wide and White was again denied brilliantly by Hinz as Jeff Hopkins’ Victory side couldn’t find the winner to take them second in the league.

Sydney meanwhile are now without a win in seven.
