The Mets are preparing to call up highly-touted prospect Luisangel Acuña, as confirmed by Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase (first reported by Jorge L. Seoud H.). Acuña is already on the 40-man roster, but the Mets will need to make a corresponding move to free up a spot for him on the active roster.
At 22 years old, Acuña was signed by the Rangers as an international free agent in 2018. He joined the Mets last year in the trade that sent Max Scherzer to Texas. Prior to the season, various experts ranked him as one of the top prospects in the Mets’ system. Despite struggling at Triple-A in 2024, he possesses promising skills such as 40 stolen bases and strong defense at multiple positions.
With Jeff McNeil sidelined and Eddy Alvarez ineligible for the postseason, the Mets find themselves in need of another infielder on the roster. Additionally, Francisco Lindor’s recent injury has further highlighted the need for depth in the infield. Despite Lindor’s optimistic outlook, the team is being cautious with his return and is looking to bolster their roster in his absence.
