Mexico City GP win ‘extremely emotional’ for departing Sainz
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Carlos Sainz reveals that his victory in the Mexico City Grand Prix was very emotional for him, especially because he won in front of his family as he nears the end of his time with Ferrari.

Following his second-place finish at COTA, Ferrari continued its strong performance in Mexico with Sainz securing pole position and ultimately winning the race, briefly losing the lead to Max Verstappen at the start. After reclaiming the top spot with a remarkable move into Turn 1, Sainz held off Lando Norris to claim victory, a result he describes as special.

Reflecting on his win, Sainz said, “I had a strong feeling that this weekend could be my chance to win the race. I was determined and focused throughout the weekend. Knowing that my family, friends, and girlfriend were there to support me, I felt like this race could be significant for me, especially as it may be my last win with Ferrari.”

Sainz also shared that winning in front of his family was a dream come true, especially with his mother witnessing a race victory for the first time. He expressed how emotional and proud he felt during the Spanish anthem and considered it one of the best moments of his career.

Recalling the critical move on Verstappen, Sainz explained, “I had to work hard for it, especially after losing the lead at the start. The battle with Max was intense, but I was determined to regain the lead and make it stick.”

Despite a challenging start and tough competition from Verstappen, Sainz remained focused and seized every opportunity to secure the victory. He mentioned that the move on Verstappen caught the Red Bull driver by surprise and initiated a thrilling battle during the race.
