Dolphins veterans reported to Miami Gardens earlier today, and the internet went wild when they learned that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa would be in attendance. However, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses in the Sunshine State, as we learned a short time ago that one of Miami’s top offseason acquisitions will begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform List.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Dolphins wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will begin training camp on the Active/PUP list, hoping to be ready for the start of the 2024 regular season.

My understanding is Beckham, 31, is working through minor things and this is part of the plan for easing him back into football. pic.twitter.com/T7MQmfQH52

Beckham Jr., 31, signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins worth up to $8.25 Million. The former first-round pick of the 2014 NFL draft (14th overall) played the 2023 season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he caught 35 of 64 targets for 565 yards and three touchdowns. In total, OBJ has 7,932 yards receiving and 59 touchdowns during his eight-year NFL career.
He signed his deal with the Dolphins back on May 3rd. During his first press conference with the Dolphins, OBJ discussed why he chose Miami and what he’s looking forward to doing this upcoming season.
“Coach Mike (McDaniel) definitely is someone who – he sold it to me because it’s just his energy, we speak the same language (when) we’re talking, the conversations we had about football. Just the opportunity… watching the film, just seeing what it is, it kind of reminds me of a place where I had a lot of success at as far as the Giants and timing and all those things he talks about and preaches. He was speaking football. We sat down for hours and we were just talking football. It just got me excited thinking about it.”
Placing Beckham Jr. on the PUP list to start the season seems like nothing more than a safety precaution by the Dolphins. It’s also not a terrible thing to do when the player has a pretty good understanding of the offense from his time with the Los Angeles Rams.
My only concern would be whether or not he and Tua Tagovailoa will be on the same page at the start of the season. Obviously, he’s a different type of wide receiver, but we all saw some of the miscommunications Tua and guys like Cedrick Wilson had throughout the 2023 season.
It may not be an ideal situation, but there’s no reason for fans to panic. Odell Beckham Jr. will suit up for the Dolphins this season, and when it does, it will be everything you ever imagined and more!
