Jake Paul is a controversial figure in the world of combat sports. Despite his success in boxing, he struggles to earn respect from fans and fellow fighters.
Recently, Paul secured his 10th boxing victory against Mike Perry, a former UFC fighter and undefeated Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship competitor. Perry previously competed in the UFC at 170 pounds.
Paul has gained recognition by defeating former UFC fighters, particularly welterweights. He knocked out Ben Askren, a former Bellator MMA champion, in under two minutes in his third professional boxing match. He also won against Tyron Woodley, a former UFC welterweight champion, in a rematch after a split decision victory.
In his most recent fight, Paul faced Anderson Silva, a former UFC middleweight champion, and won by unanimous decision. Despite a loss to Tommy Fury, a professional boxer, Paul defeated Nate Diaz, a former UFC lightweight and welterweight, by unanimous decision. He then won two consecutive bouts against inactive boxers by knockout.
Originally scheduled to fight Mike Tyson, Paul instead faced Perry due to Tyson’s medical issue. Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping criticized the match, accusing Paul of selecting smaller opponents and disregarding weight classes.
“The fight community, including myself, supported Mike Perry, but the reality is he was outsized by Jake Paul. Weight classes exist for a reason in combat sports,” Bisping stated on his YouTube channel. “The mismatch was evident and the fight was unfair.”
Bisping expressed disdain for Paul, even considering coming out of retirement to confront him. According to Bisping, Paul strategically chooses opponents who are smaller and less experienced.
“Jake Paul irritates me. He talks a big game but selectively picks opponents who are smaller and less skilled,” Bisping emphasized. “His behavior is disrespectful to the sport.”
