Michaela Onyenwere is remaining with the Chicago Sky on a one-year deal, according to Winsidr’s own Rachel Galligan.
The 2021 Rookie of the Year appeared in 34 games (18 starts) during her first year in Chicago, compiling per-game averages of 6.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.4 blocks in 18.7 minutes. Her 41.5 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from deep were career highs, and she settled into an expanded role in the second half of the season. Post-Olympics, Onyenwere averaged 10.1 points per game in 28.8 minutes a night.
Onyenwere has the ability to stretch and knock down a shot on the wing, but also can attack closeouts and be creative in finding her own shot off the dribble. She’s a physical defender who is comfortable switching onto players larger than her, which offers the Sky some lineup versatility. After playing two years in New York and a year in Phoenix, this will be her second campaign in Chicago, whose offseason has been relatively quiet to this point, aside from the return of franchise legend Courtney Vandersloot (who should pair well with Onyenwere’s willingness to run the floor). Contract terms, as per usual, have not been disclosed.
