Mike Vrabel is considered one of the top candidates in the NFL head coach market, but it seems the job he prefers may not be available this year.
Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda reported that sources close to Vrabel have stated that the 49-year-old is interested in coaching the New England Patriots.
Vrabel previously played linebacker for the Patriots from 2001 to 2008, winning three Super Bowls with the team. Despite the Patriots’ recent struggles, reports suggest he is open to coaching his former team.
While Vrabel is a frontrunner for the New York Jets head coaching position, many around the NFL doubt that he will ultimately take the job. It is more likely that Vrabel is using the Jets as leverage to secure another coaching opportunity.
Jerod Mayo is currently in his first season as the head coach of the New England Patriots. The team committed to him as their future head coach before parting ways with Bill Belichick. Vrabel was unexpectedly fired by the Tennessee Titans, and if Robert Kraft had known he would become available, it is uncertain how he would have approached the situation.
While the Patriots have not publicly confirmed Mayo as their coach for 2025, there are doubts about Kraft firing the 38-year-old after just one season. However, Mayo’s recent performance has raised concerns.
Vrabel had a record of 54-45 during his six seasons as head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023, leading the team to the playoffs three times.
