The WNBA’s fourth annual Commissioner’s Cup kicks off tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET, featuring the Minnesota Lynx and the NY Liberty. The defending Cup champs, NY Liberty, will face off against the Lynx in this must-watch game for hardware and cash.
This year, teams played five Commissioner’s Cup games instead of the usual 10, facing off against their in-conference rivals. The top team from each conference in these games will play in the championship game.
The NY Liberty dominated their opponents, remaining undefeated in their matchups, while the Lynx only dropped one game on their way to securing a spot in the final game with a $500K prize pool at stake. Winners earn around $30K each, with additional bonuses for MVPs and even the losing team takes home $10K per player.
Both teams are coming into the game on hot streaks, with the NY Liberty winning three straight games and the Lynx on a six-game winning streak. While the Lynx did defeat the Liberty 84-67 in their last meeting, it was an off night for NY’s Jonquel Jones, who is part of a formidable trio alongside reigning MVP Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu.
The Lynx are led by Napheesa Collier, averaging over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, with support from Kayla McBride. The teamwork and depth of the Lynx squad are key to their success.
