The Minnesota Lynx emerged victorious as the 2024 Commissioner’s Cup champions, defeating the NY Liberty 94-89 in a fast-paced battle last night. Each player will receive approximately $30K from the total $500K prize pool of the in-season tournament.
Before the game began, league leaders Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart of the Liberty expressed their disappointment in the venue change from Barclays Center to UBS Arena, which was about an hour away, due to the NBA Draft taking place on the same night.
The Lynx staged an impressive comeback to secure the win, despite the venue change and lack of attendance. The game, featuring two of the league’s top teams, was a thrilling match-up. Sabrina Ionescu led the Liberty to an early lead, but the Lynx took advantage of New York’s 21 turnovers. Bridget Carleton played a crucial role in the comeback, scoring 23 points, including six three-pointers.
Napheesa Collier, who scored 21 points, was named the Cup MVP, earning an additional $5K. The Lynx celebrated their victory on the court and in their bank accounts.
