Sabrina Ionescu has her own shoe and now she will have a gym named after her.
Earlier this week, the Acalanes Union High School District unanimously voted to name the Miramonte (Orinda, Calif.) gym the Sabrina Ionescu Gymnasium. A renaming ceremony is planned at a later date.
“Sabrina truly represents the best of what it means to be a Miramonte Matador,” Miramonte principal Ben Campopiano said in a release. “Her legacy shows our students that greatness comes from humility, hard work, and supporting those around you. Having her name on our gym will inspire generations of students to dream big and go after their goals with purpose.”
The New York Liberty guard starred for Miramonte, earning MaxPreps National Player of the Year honors in 2016 and piling up 2,606 career points. As a senior, Ionescu averaged 25.3 points, 8.8 assists and 7.6 rebounds per game while leading the program to the Open Division title game.
At the University of Oregon, Ionescu earned 2020 Associated Press Player of the Year and was a three-time Pac-12 Player of the Year.
The first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Ionescu led the Liberty to a title in 2024.
Ionescu’s signature Nike shoe, the Sabrina, is among the most popular sneakers and in its third incarnation. She heads the charity SI20 Foundation and works with former coach Kelly Sopak for the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase each January.
