Could Teoscar Hernández be in line for a big payday this offseason?
The outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers has proven to be a valuable addition this season, despite the team’s significant spending on stars like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow. Hernández signed a one-year, $23.5 million contract with the Dodgers.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the 2024 season, Hernández, coming off a strong season where he hit .269 and earned his second MLB All-Star selection, is a strong candidate for an extension.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Hernández could be looking at a lucrative deal in free agency this offseason.
“I don’t see why not, a five-year deal for over $100 million,” Nightengale said. “Everybody’s looking for guys who can slug and he’s one of them… It’s hard to find those guys. Why not bring him back?”
The decision on Hernández’s future will ultimately rest with the Dodgers or potentially another team. Hernández has expressed his desire to remain with the Dodgers, but understands that the decision is out of his hands.
“I want to stay,” Hernández mentioned. “I want to be a part of this team for 3,4,5 years to come, but it’s not in my hands. It has to do with the Dodgers. I’m just trying to do my best.”
Hernández has had a strong season with 150 hits, 81 runs, 30 home runs, and 92 RBIs. He is just two home runs shy of his career-high.
