While the Indiana Fever saw a massive improvement last season, it wasn’t enough to get Caitlin Clark & Co. their first playoff win. So, the attempt to change their fate this year has already begun. With the offseason in full swing and free agency in motion, the Fever is making moves to attract some of the biggest names in the WNBA. Sydney Colson was one of the recent names to join that list. But what really sealed the deal?

According to a national broadcaster, there was more to Colson’s decision than just a fresh start. It turns out a key player played a major role in bringing the two-time champion to the team. After spending the last three seasons with the Las Vegas Aces, Colson had every reason to stay with the reigning champs.

But when free agency opened up, she set her sights on Indiana. Why? Well, in her own words, it was about finding a team that values winning and culture. But that’s not all—one name kept coming up: Caitlin Clark.

“Just wanted to be somewhere that wants to win with a huge focus on culture… She said she heard some good things about Caitlin Clark from her Aces teammate Kate Martin as well. So that made the decision easy,” shared Emily Proud, sports anchor and reporter for WKRN News 2, during the AU broadcast.

Well Kate Matin and CC have been inseparable since their Iowa days. “So happy to be by your side,” the Aces had written as Carver-Hawkeye Arena witnessed Clark’s #22 rise up to the rafters. Given the opportunity, they want to be on the same side again. For the 2024 ROTY, it is a “goal.”

So, no doubt stories of on and off-court must have aired from Martin’s mouth to Colson’s ears. But, all this while the most benefitted remains Indiana Fever.

Sydney Colson to Indiana Fever: A win-win deal that changes the game!

Playing strategically, the Fever wasted no time making the signing official. General Manager Amber Cox highlighted the potential Colson brings to the table, calling her a “proven veteran” with a championship pedigree.

“Sydney is a proven veteran in our league and, throughout her career, has delivered for her teams in many big moments,” Cox said in a statement. “She adds depth to our point guard position. We have the utmost confidence in her ability to step into any situation and deliver on both ends of the floor.”

The move wasn’t just about adding depth at point guard; it was about bringing in a player who understands how to win. And with Colson likely playing behind Clark, Indiana is stacking up on experience where it matters most.

From the beginning of the offseason, the Fever aimed to lock in seasoned winners to elevate their young core. With the addition of Natasha Howard and DeWanna Bonner alongside Colson, Indiana will be a tough contender in the playoffs this upcoming season.

This mix of veteran leadership and young star power could be exactly what the franchise needs to make a serious playoff run. But Colson’s value isn’t just limited to the court. In fact, her charisma and leadership will provide a huge boost to the Fever locker room. Known for her humor, she’s bound to become a fan favorite in Indiana.

Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston (7) celebrates with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) altering recording a triple-double Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Indiana Fever defeated the Los Angeles Sparks, 93-86.

The Fever’s free agency strategy has raised some eyebrows, with ESPN analysts debating whether Indiana did enough to elevate their roster. But between Clark’s rising stardom, Aliyah Boston’s continued growth, and a mix of championship-winning veterans, this team is shaping up to be a real threat.

In the end, Colson’s decision to leave Las Vegas wasn’t just about finding a new home—it was about joining a movement. And with Caitlin Clark at the center of it all, Indiana Fever fans have every reason to be excited for what’s coming next.
