The Nationals have acquired right-hander Michael Rucker off waivers from the Phillies, while designating Travis Blankenhorn for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Rucker has been optioned to Triple-A Rochester, maintaining Washington’s roster at full capacity.
Rucker, 30, was recently designated for assignment by the Phillies after being acquired in a cash deal from the Cubs in February. He battled injuries during his time with the Phils, spending most of the season on the injured list. Despite his struggles with a high ERA in the minors this year, Rucker has shown a solid strikeout rate and ground ball percentage.
In previous seasons, Rucker was a reliable member of the Cubs’ bullpen, but his performance has been more inconsistent recently. As for Blankenhorn, he has seen limited playing time with the Nationals, but has shown promise in the minor leagues. A versatile player, Blankenhorn has bounced around different positions and has shown potential at the plate.
