Despite losing more than 90 games for the past four years, the Washington Nationals are assembling a talented young team with great potential.
It is now time for them to add veteran players to complement the young core, and they have reportedly acquired first baseman Nathaniel Lowe from the Texas Rangers on Sunday afternoon.
In return for Lowe, the Nationals are trading left-handed relief pitcher Robert Garcia to the Rangers.
Lowe had a batting average of .265 with 16 home runs and 69 RBI last season for the Rangers.
While not a superstar, Lowe has consistently been an above-average hitter in the Major Leagues throughout his career, never finishing a season with an OPS+ below 100. He has exceeded 112 in each of the past four seasons.
He brings a veteran presence to the plate, displaying patience and the ability to get on base, qualities that the Nationals are in need of.
Lowe also received a Gold Glove in 2023 and a Silver Slugger award in 2022.
With a solid young core including players like CJ Abrams, James Wood, Dylan Crews, Keibert Ruiz, MacKenzie Gore, and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 MLB draft, adding a successful veteran bat like Lowe further strengthens the team.
Moreover, Lowe is under team control for two more seasons, making it a beneficial deal for the Nationals as they only had to give up a relief pitcher. It is a win-win situation for the improving Nationals team.
