The NBA is considering the idea of establishing a yearly tournament or a new league in Europe, as mentioned by Adam Silver in an interview with Tim Reynolds of AP.
“We have not reached any final decisions yet. I still believe there is a great opportunity here. It is not something that will happen overnight in terms of league restructuring,” said Silver.
“However, our team owners are interested in further investing in global basketball,” Silver added.
Silver revealed that discussions about expanding into Europe have been ongoing for many years within the NBA. He mentioned that the talks with FIBA are now more serious, largely due to the league’s new media rights.
If a new competition is established, it would not replace the current European basketball system.
“It is essential that whatever steps we take in Europe, they complement and enhance the existing basketball structure in the region,” said Silver.
