Waco, Texas – Action gets underway today from the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco as the 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships begin Elite Eight play as the battle for a National Championship has reached its final few rounds.
After three rounds of competition, only eight teams are left standing. With a staggered schedule of play, fans will be treated to four matches on Thursday with the matches being scheduled three hours apart beginning at 10 am (CST).
First on court will be No. 1 seeded Georgia against No. 8 seeded Duke. For the Bulldogs, they have swept all three opponents (FAMU, Georgia Tech, California) en route to their berth into the Elite Eight. Meanwhile, for Duke, they swept Bryant and FAU in the regional round before knocking off No. 9 seeded Auburn 4-2 to advance in the tournament.
Following the opening match with be No. 5 seeded North Carolina and No. 13 seeded LSU. For the Tigers, this appearance marks the first time in program history that they have advanced this far in the NCAA Championship. On the contrary, the Tar Heels have been common sight at the final site, winning the 2023 NCAA Championship the last time they advanced to the Elite Eight.
Next up at 4pm (CST) will be a matchup between No. 2 seeded Texas A&M and No. 10 seeded Tennessee. As the defending NCAA Champions, the Aggies have shown no signs of slowing down in 2025 beating Quinnipiac, UC Santa Barbara, and UCLA to advance to the Elite Eight. Tennessee makes another trip to the final site after becoming a cinderella story last season. The Lady Vols have been playing some of their best tennis of the year over the past three weekends and will look to carry it into Waco this week.
Finally, in the nightcap, No. 3 seeded Michigan squares off with Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls, who are the only remaining unseeded team in the draw, have impressed many with their strong play this postseason after being bounced earlier than anticipated in 2024 when they were the No. 1 ranked team and unbeaten into the round of sixteen. Michigan survived a tough test against Texas in the Super Regionals relying on Julia Fliegner to clinch the match for them at the No. 1 singles position to claim their spot in the Elite Eight.
