The only Nebraska Cornhusker to finish her career with at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists, Sam Haiby is now hooping in Ireland, playing for Killester in the Women’s Super League.
The former Husker standout (2018-23) recently spoke to Swish Appeal about her pro life in Australia and Ireland, as well as about her life outside of basketball, including her health sciences degree and the community work she did while at Nebraska. A few highlights from the chat include:
On playing different positions and adapting her game to the circumstances:
I like to be able to try to put my team before myself and just kind of do whatever the coach needs me to. It was the same way when I was playing baseball as well. I remember my coach telling me I was like a Swiss Army Knife or something. I was able to play different positions and it didn’t bother me. Wherever I could get on the field or on the court, I was happy to do that.
On majoring in nutrition and health sciences:
I’ve always been fascinated with the human body and working with that, and then just my background in sports has made it a bit more my niche area too. I’m not necessarily focused on a lot of the nutrition aspect, but more on sports science or biomechanical movements and things like that, but I just think my fascination with the human body and how that interacts [made me decide on that major]. And that kind of goes hand in hand with sports. That was definitely the reason why I chose the degree path that I did.
