The No. 1-seed South Carolina Gamecocks pulled off a 71-67 win over the No. 4-seed Maryland Terrapins on Friday night in Birmingham, an effort that took the rallying of the entire team.
As the defending champs take a moment to bask in the win and prepare for their Sunday game against No. 2-seed Duke, the rest of us are still marveling at MiLaysia Fulwiley’s behind-the-back floater at the end of the third quarter.
Fulwiley has been confidently pulling off this move all season, but Friday night’s display was truly something. The pressure was on the Gamecocks, who had trailed by two points at halftime, and they needed something special. The play was the moment that lit the Gamecocks on fire, and from there it was clear that the game was in the bag.
On Saturday morning, Swish Appeal asked Fulwiley’s teammates Bree Hall and Sania Feagin about Fulwiley’s highlight and what went through their minds when they saw her coming down the court.
For Feagin, it was just Fulwiley being Fulwiley. “For me, it be like, ‘Oh yeah, Lay, do your thing,’” she laughed.
Hall agreed, but revealed something else: Fulwiley practices everything she does, a characteristic many basketball savants have in common. “I mean, I agree,” she said. “She does these things….people think she just does it in games, but no—these are things that she does in practice, and it’s a true skill for her. This is her normal.”
South Carolina will face Duke on Sunday, Mar. 30 at 1 p.m. ET (ABC).
