Stasha Carey is a 6-foot-2 forward from Ohio, known primarily for her play close to the basket.
Carey played collegiately at Pittsburgh (2014-16) and then Rutgers (2017-19), where she suited up for legendary Scarlet Knight head coach C. Vivian Stringer. Since turning pro, she has played in Hungary, Greece, Mexico and Israel.
Primarily a defensive specialist, Carey spoke to Swish Appeal about her shot blocking ability, winning trophies in different countries and wearing No. 35. Some highlights from our conversation include:
On how her decision to transfer to Rutgers was motivated by the opportunity to play for Coach Stringer:
It was huge. I was so excited to meet her. We had a great conversation. She’s really just an amazing woman, very powerful, speaks life into you. Well-connected. A teacher. She’s done so many great things. She’s just a great person all around. It was an honor to even be in her presence during my recruiting process. She’s a Hall of Famer. She’s amazing.
On being a great defender:
It’s just in my nature to play defense, on top of being in different programs where defense was a main point. When I’m in the game, I’m not really thinking, “Oh, I don’t wanna play defense,” or, “I just only wanna play offense.” I enjoy both aspects of being on the court because I feel like, a lot of times. defense leads to offense. So yeah, it was something that I feel like I was naturally drawn to, but it was also something that was instilled in me.
On blocking shots:
I think it’s just about timing really. If you watch enough film on the team that you’re playing, you can kind of see their tendencies, like knowing when somebody is normally going to pump fake a couple times, or someone that’s gonna just go straight for the layup. But I think it’s all about timing at the end of the day.
