Nelly Korda and Caitlin Clark played a star-studded, nine-hole round of golf at Wednesday’s pro-am at the Pelican Golf Club.
BELLEAIR, Fla. — Bradenton native Nelly Korda, the world’s number-one women’s golfer, has won six tournaments this season and aims to win her third Annika Tournament title in four years.
However, her presence at Wednesday’s pro-am at the Pelican Golf Club was not the main reason for the large crowd that gathered in Belleair before sunrise.
Most excited spectators were wearing Indiana Fever gear as WNBA star Caitlin Clark joined Korda for the front nine of the competition.
Clark, known for her basketball skills, admits her golf swing needs work, with some drives going astray while Korda’s remained precise. Despite their contrasting abilities, they both enjoyed the game.
“It was amazing. She’s so sweet and nice. It was great to spend time with her,” Korda said. “We felt like two friends hanging out.”
“Seeing them in action up close is something people would pay for. I got to do it for free and had a blast,” Clark said.
The 22-year-old WNBA star has been a golf fan since childhood and admires Korda’s game, while Korda respects Clark’s approach to being a top player in her sport.
Korda praised Clark’s comfort playing in front of a large crowd and her enjoyment of the game.
Clark played the back nine with golf legend Annika Sorenstam, who sees Clark’s presence as positive for women’s golf.
“The impact she has could inspire young girls to take up golf instead of basketball. They look up to her,” Sorenstam said.
The Annika tournament starts on Thursday and runs through Sunday.
