The New England Patriots have appointed their ex-player Mike Vrabel as the team’s new head coach. The announcement comes shortly after Patriots owner Robert Kraft dismissed another former player, Jerod Mayo, following a disappointing 4-13 season under Mayo’s leadership.
Vrabel, who enjoyed eight successful seasons as a player in New England, winning three Super Bowl titles and being inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2023, was the preferred choice due to his strong ties with the Patriots and his coaching achievements in Tennessee over six seasons.
By hiring the 49-year-old Vrabel, Kraft is entrusting another former Patriots defensive star who, like Mayo, is known for his rapport with players.
Mayo, a former assistant under legendary Patriots coach Bill Belichick, struggled in his first head coaching role, particularly with a young team led by rookie quarterback Drake Maye. Reflecting on Mayo’s tenure, Kraft admitted that he may not have been fully prepared for the challenges of being an NFL head coach.
In contrast, Vrabel brings with him a solid coaching record, including a 56-48 overall record in Tennessee from 2018 to 2023, playoff appearances, and an AFC championship game appearance in 2019.
Vrabel had been working as a consultant with Cleveland before his contract expired, paving the way for discussions with other teams. Despite interest from the New York Jets, Vrabel was drawn back to New England, where he will now aim to revive the franchise he has been closely associated with throughout his NFL career.
Other candidates considered for the head coaching position included Byron Leftwich, Pep Hamilton, and Ben Johnson, all with experience as offensive coordinators for various NFL teams.
