Admittedly, the theme of this edition was a natural choice. Our passion for classic racecars was indulged in recent months at events like the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. There were also thrilling vintage races at Road America and in British Columbia, among others.
We must give credit to the event organizers, but it’s the vehicle owners who truly deserve applause. They go beyond mere display by pushing their valuable vehicles to the limit on racetracks for our enjoyment.
While their actions may not be entirely selfless, the joy and satisfaction they derive from the experience is evident. Without their passion and commitment, many of these historic cars would remain static relics or, worse, rust away. This issue serves as a celebration of the thriving historic motorsports scene.
Furthermore, there are individuals who not only restore cars but entire racing series. In this issue, we had the opportunity to speak with NASCAR legend Ray Evernham about the IROC Reunion at Lime Rock Park. This event celebrated the history of the series, and Evernham aims to revive it on a larger scale in the future.
Despite our focus on historic racing, we also feature stories on legendary drivers, series, and performances in racing history.
The 60th anniversary of John Surtees’ Formula 1 World Championship is highlighted, exploring his transition from motorcycle racing to F1. We also delve into memorable comeback drives in F1, including Juan Manuel Fangio’s iconic victory at the Nürburgring.
We reflect on Rick Mears’ remarkable recovery from a severe injury and his journey to becoming a four-time Indy 500 winner. Additionally, we explore the captivating world of Formula Atlantics, reminiscing on the stars it produced.
This issue is a tribute to the retro yet vibrant world of historic motorsports. The October/November 2024 edition of Vintage Motorsport is now available in both print and digital formats. We hope you relish reading it.
